HOW TO VOTE

EARLY VOTING / ABSENTEE VOTING

Any eligible voter may vote by absentee ballot or early ballot at any election.

You may request and cast your early vote at the Blackstock Government Building, 221 N. Wisconsin, not earlier than 15 days before an election nor later than Friday before the election.

To vote absentee, your request for an absentee ballot must be filed with the County Clerk where you reside no earlier than January 1 immediately preceding the election and no later than the close of business on the Friday immediately preceding the election. If you wish to receive the absentee ballot by mail, the application must be filed no later than the close of business on the Tuesday immediately preceding the election.

VOTING IN A PRIMARY ELECTION

To be eligible to vote in a Primary Election, your voter registration must show
affiliation with a political party.

HOW TO CONTACT YOUR REPRESENTATIVES

Use Email, letter or fax to contact your representatives. Make the messages
short and send them at strategic times. Note: if you choose to send a letter, it may take up to 4 weeks to be delivered because of screening.

TO WRITE AN EFFECTIVE MESSAGE:

DO address the official properly.

DO check the correct spelling of the name and be certain of the exact name of the office
held by the representative.

DO be brief and to the point; one issue per letter is suggested.

DO write early in a legislative session.

DO identify the bill by title and number or by its popular name.

DO use your own words or paraphrase suggested comments.

DO include your address and sign your name legibly.

DO be courteous and reasonable.

DO write to say you approve, not just to complain or oppose. A work of appreciation may make your representative remember you favorably the next time you communicate.

DO include pertinent editorials or reports from local newspapers.

HOW TO ADDRESS YOUR REPRESENTATIVES

It is usual to address the President as: "Dear Mr. President," and close with "respectfully yours." For other officials, use their title and last name, and close with "Sincerely yours."
